Our History

The David Foster Pre-School and Afterschool Academy was established in 1994, earning its name from the founder’s father, the late David Augustus Foster. He instilled the lesson that education is success within her, ensuring that she knew that the sky was the limit, and that was exactly what she should aim for. That is a lesson that Ms. Sheila Foster, Founder, has passed on to the students that have been lucky enough to experience her daycare. She believes that every child can learn if given the chance to develop their potential.

Initially a teacher at the George Wingate High School in Brooklyn, Ms. Foster would visit her cousin’s daycare each day after she finished work as it was only a block away. After seeing how much the small children were learning while in daycare, Ms. Foster became inspired to start her own daycare. In 1994, with the help of her cousin, she started her daycare, taking care of only 12 children. By 1997, Ms. Foster acquired a building on Rogers Avenue, where the daycare remained until 2014 when it was moved to Clarkson Avenue. Licensed with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Fire Department, and the Buildings Department, the David Foster Pre-School and Afterschool Academy promotes safety and quality care for all children.

A daycare that constantly evolves, the David Foster Academy also began offering virtual learning to their students due to the coronavirus pandemic. By July 2021, the Academy will begin working with the Department of Education. As David Foster once said, “the sky is the limit,” and the David Foster Academy will continue to soar as it brings to the forefront the best, the greatest, and the finest educated children of the 21st century.
